Programming Considerations

Withintheuserprogram,oneofthefirstthingstoconsiderisportinitialisation.Afterareset,allof

theI/Odataandportcontrolregisterswillbesethigh.ThismeansthatallI/Opinswilldefaultto

aninputstate,thelevelofwhichdependsontheotherconnectedcircuitryandwhetherpull-high

selectionshavebeenchosen.Iftheportcontrolregister,PAC,arethenprogrammedtosetupsome

pinsasoutputs,theseoutputpinswillhaveaninitialhighoutputvalueunlesstheassociatedport

dataregister,PA,arefirstprogrammed.Selectingwhichpinsareinputsandwhichareoutputscan

beachievedbyte-widebyloadingthecorrectvaluesintotheappropriateportcontrolregisteror

byprogrammingindividualbitsintheportcontrolregisterusingthe“SET[m].i”and“CLR[m].i”

instructions.Notethatwhenusingthesebitcontrolinstructions,aread-modify-writeoperationtakes

place.Themicrocontrollermustfirstreadinthedataontheentireport,modifyittotherequirednew

bitvaluesandthenrewritethisdatabacktotheoutputports.

SLEEPorIDLEMode,variousmethodsareavailabletowakethedeviceup.Oneoftheseisahigh

function.
